The University of Illinois at Chicago, more commonly referred to as simply UIC, is a state-funded public research university located in Chicago, which is the largest city in the US state of Illinois, as well as the 3rd most populated city in USA, having more than 2.5 million people living within its limits. The city’s metropolitan area, which is also known as "Chicagoland", has more than 9 million inhabitants, spread across the states of Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin, fact which makes it the 26th largest metropolitan area in the world.
UIC traces its roots back in the late 19th century, when several private health colleges were founded, which were later affiliated with the university, being chartered in 1867, in Champagne-Urbana. The first act to start the establishment of a campus in Chicago was introduced in 1935, by newly-elected state representative Richard J. Daley, which was officially opened in February, 1965, under the name of University of Illinois at Chicago Circle (UICC), the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) being formed in September 1982.
Today, UIC is ranked among the best 100 universities, in the world, out of 500 institutions compared in the Academic Ranking of World Universities, being also consistently placed in the top 50 US institutions for research expenditures. UIC offers to approximately 26 000 students (15 000 undergraduates), 74 bachelor degrees, 77 master’s degrees and 60 doctoral degrees, through its 14 colleges, including through the specialized Honors College.
The athletic teams from UIC are known as the UIC Flames, who compete in the NCAA, in various sports, traditionally focusing on basketball, and recently in soccer and baseball, in which they’ve experienced their latest successes. The baseball team has recorded more than 30 victories in 9 straight seasons, winning the 7 Horizon League Championships, advancing to the NCAA regional in 4 of the past 6 years – in 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2008. In September, 2006, the men’s soccer team received its highest ranking, when SoccerTimes.com College Coaches Poll named them 6th in the country.
